
About Functional Yoga
Functional Yoga honours the individual body. It is less specific yoga style but rather an approach to yoga. It is based on modern research of ancient wisdom and knowledge. It is more about how you feel in a pose versus how you look in a pose.
In this class we blend anatomy, mobility, stability and strength training with traditional yoga all aiming to improve overall body function. We use props such as blocks, balls, chairs, weights and resistance bands. We practice either standing up, lying on the ground, or sitting on a mat or chair.
Functional Yoga for deep core and and pelvic floor combines yoga and mindfulness with the emphasize on proper breathing. We give equal attention to activation and relaxation to build and maintain a healthy body.
Mindfulness
Mindfulness is the foundation a yoga practice stands on. It focuses one’s awareness on the present moment, while acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations. Cultivating mindfulness both on and off the mat supports mind/body connection which can help us to increase our ability to regulate emotions, decrease stress, anxiety and depression.
